A diligent historical student, a man of fine scholarship, of courteous and gentle nature, and a generous encourager in the field of local antiquity and research. He married (1) Jessie Thorburn, and had issue - Dora, died young: (2) 1897, Mary Johnston, daughter of William Veitch, Depute-Clerk of Session, and had issue - Elizabeth Mary (MA, Edinburgh), Harrogate College, born 12th October 1898; Winifred Agnes (MA, Edinburgh), Secretary and House Tutor St Bride's School, Helensburgh, born 5th April 1900; John, engineer, Nigeria, born 16th November 1902; William Veitch (twin), born 16th November 1902.
