Body of text  ANDERSON, JOHN, born Roberton, Roxburghshire, 20th July 1845, son of Thomas A, schoolmaster, and Margaret Dale; educated at Roberton and University of Edinburgh; licensed by Presbytery of Edinburgh 1874; ordained (by Presbytery of Edinburgh) missionary to Darjeeling 8th July 1874; resigned (from ill-health) 1877; returned to Scotland and engaged in literary work, chiefly genealogical, assisting Sir William Fraser in the compilation of his Family Histories; appointed assistant curator of the Historical Department, HM General Register House, 1896; appointed successor to John Maitland Thomson, LLD, as Curator in 1906; died 3rd April 1911. A diligent historical student, a man of fine scholarship, of courteous and gentle nature, and a generous encourager in the field of local antiquity and research. He married (1) Jessie Thorburn, and had issue - Dora, died young: (2) 1897, Mary Johnston, daughter of William Veitch, Depute-Clerk of Session, and had issue - Elizabeth Mary (MA, Edinburgh), Harrogate College, born 12th October 1898; Winifred Agnes (MA, Edinburgh), Secretary and House Tutor St Bride's School, Helensburgh, born 5th April 1900; John, engineer, Nigeria, born 16th November 1902; William Veitch (twin), born 16th November 1902.
