Body of text  JOHN PATON, born Selkirk, 12th July, 1833, son of Robert Paton, WS, and Isabella Phipps; educated at Selkirk Grammar School and Unversity of Edinburgh; licensed by Presbyteryof Selkirk in 1857; assistant at Galashiels and at East Parish, Perth; ordained by Presbytery of Edinburgh as a military chaplain 8th April, 1859; served in India with the 72nd Regiment till 1865; chaplain on the Bombay Ecclesiastical Establishment, 1865-74; Fellow of the University of Bombay (1871); admitted to this charge 17th September, 1874; DD (Glasgow, 1899); convenor of Committee on Aids to Devotion, 1891-1905; chairman of the Board of Directors Crichton Royal Institution, Dumfries, 1892-1905; died at Edinburgh, during the sittings of General Assembly, 31st May 1905. He married 17th February, 1860, Ann Georgina (died 27th September, 1901), daughter of John White, Edinburgh, and had issue - Catherine Isabella, born 19th February, 1861 (married 19th January, 1907, James Cumming Raff Macdonald, WS, Dumfries); Robert John M.D., Newport, Monmouthshire, born 19th February, 1862, died from blood poisioning contracted in the course of a successful surgical operation, 16th November, 1907; Ann Georgina White, born 10th February, 1866 (married 1st June, 1897, Harry Renton Mein).
