John Clarke Crosthwaite : born Dec. 25, 1835 : educated at Merchant Taylors' and St. John's College, Oxford : entered the Bengal Civil Service, 1857 : served chiefly in the N.W.P. : Chief Commissioner of British Burma, 1883-4 : Chief Commissioner of Central Provinces, 1885-6 : Chief Commissioner of Burma, 1887-90 : Member of the Governor - General's Supreme Council, 1890-1, and in 1892 : Lieutenant-Governor of N.W.P. and Oudh, 1892-5 : Member of the Council of India, 1895-1 905 : author of Notes on the N.W. Provinces of India, 1870: K.C.S.I. in 1888.
