Denison, Governor of Tasmania, 1849-53 : in the Maori war, New Zealand : on the staff of Sir George Grey : Surveyor- General of Victoria : Minister for Public Lands in the Legislative Assembly at Melbourne : nine years Director of Works for the Navy : Governor and C. in C. of the Straits Settlements, 1873-5 : P.W.D. Member of the Supreme Council of the Governor-General, 1875-80 : Commandant of the School of Military Engineering at Chatham, 1880-2 : Inspr-General of Fortifications, 1882-6 : retired in 1886 as Lt-General : K.C.M.G., 1873 : G.C.M.G., 1885 : Col.
