Entry  Went out to India in a merchant's house : acted as Editor of the Bombay Gazette : was a special war-correspondent in the Afghan war, 1878, on the Kandahar side : went out to the battle-field of Maiwand, July 27, 1880 : was similarly employed as correspondent in Egypt, Madagascar, Tonquin, the Nile expedition, from 1880-5 ; killed in the fighting after Abuklea on Jan. 18, 1885 : a tablet put up to his memory in St. Paul's Cathedral.
