	Entry	Born Jan. n, 1793 : at Jorehat, Assam : was the first explorer of tea tracts in Assam, and discoverer of the indigenous tea plant in Assam : was appointed Superintendent of Tea cultivation under the Government of India until the tea industry was adopted by private enterprise, as stated on a memorial tablet to him in the Church at Tezpur : wrote a report on the manufacture of tea, and on the export and produce of the tea plantations in Assam, 1839 : died April 23, 1871
