Entry  Chasseur of the French regiment of Pondicherry : taken prisoner at the capture of Pondicherry in 1778 by Sir Hector Munro : at the request of the French Governor, Barras' regiment was permitted to retain its colours : he became a prisoner on parole in Madras and Poonamali: returning to France, he rose to prominence as a Director during the Revolution : he was under orders to return to India, with other commissaires, but they never started : he became Commandant-General of the armies of Paris.
