| Surname | Ayub Khan | | Year of Birth | 1849 | | Entry | Fourth son of Shir Ali, Amir of Afghanistan, brother of Yakub Khan (q.v.) : was long a fugitive in Persia, but was appointed Governor of Herat by Yakub in 1879 : he advanced thence upon Kandahar in July, 1880, and at Maiwand, on the 27th, defeated General Burrows and his force : besieged Kandahar : on Sep. 1. he fought the battle of Kandahar against Sir F. Roberts (q.v.), who had marched thither from Kabul, and was routed, fleeing towards Herat : in July, 1881, he defeated Amir Abdur Rahman's troops and captured Kandahar, but, being defeated there by the Amir, fled to Persia, where he was made a prisoner of state : he escaped and tried to cross the Afghan frontier in 1887, but was repulsed, and surrendered to the British Agent at Mashad : eventually he was made over to the Government of India and interned in India, being kept at Rawul Pindi. |
