CommentSue McKay has kindly authorized us to publish her transcriptions of Family History-related data from the Announcements in the South African Commercial Advertiser. This is because they include very many references to personnel in the service of The East India Company en route to or from India or on furlough in S. Africa, which offered a more temperate climate. Also included are many officers and soldiers of the British Army regiments who may well have served in India shortly before or after serving in South Africa.

Event  Ship Incident
Full Entry  CAPE: By the 'Eliza Smith', C G WATTS Master, which left Algoa Bay n the 1st October and arrived at the Mauritius on the 16th ultimo, we learn that the ship 'Neptune' had anchored at the Cape on the 19th September. The 'Neptune' had 282 Convicts on board. 7 had died of the scurvey. As soon as the news of the 'Neptune' having anchored became known at the Cape, the ""Anti Convict Committee"" met at midnight to concert measures to prevent the landing of the Convicts. On the following day the Bells were rung and the gongs sounded to spread alarm. At 11 o'clock a memorial was presented to the Governor praying that he would not permit the Convicts to land, or to stop in any part of the Colony. The answer of the Governor was not long delayed; at half past 11 o'clock the Governor replied that the 'Neptune' should remain at anchor in Simon's Bay until fresh orders were received from the Home Government. The contractor has refused to furnish provisions to the 'Castor' and the 'Neptune' was in want of meat and water. The Colonists appeared resolved to force the 'Neptune' to quit their shores.
