Major-General Thomas Raikes, C.B. died on Saturday in the 59th year of his age. Born in 1822, he entered the Army in 1840, was promoted to a lieutenancy in 1845, and obtained a captaincy in 1854. He served with the 1st Madras Fusiliers in the Burmese war of 1852-53, including the relief of Pegu and subsequent operations in its vicinity, and commanded a detachment at the recapture of Beeling. He also served in the suppression of the Mutiny in Bengal in 1857-58, and was present with General Havelock's column at the actions of Futtehpore, Aoung, Pandoo, and Cawnpore. He commanded a detachment under General Neill for the defence of Cawnpore during havelock's first entry into Oude, and was afterwards present at the actions of Bithoor, Mungarwar, and Alumbagh, the relief of Lucknow, and the defence of the Residency. He also took part in the occupation of Alumbagh under General Outram, and also in the capture of Lucknow. He was engaged in the campaign in Oude in 1858, include the passage of the Goomtee at Sultanpore, and other minor affairs. He also commanded afield column of all arms from the 7th to the 22d of October, 1858, and defeated the enemy at Shapore. He was nominated a Companion of the Order of the Bath (Military Division) in 1869, and became major-general in 1877. |
