Inscription  To the Memory of Thomas Payne, Esq. First Lieut. Of His Majesty's Ship 'Phoenix', who died the 13th of September 1790, aged 25 years. In gratitude to whose memory, and as a small testimony of their unalterable affection, this Monument is erected by desire of his faithful shipmates, who sincerely lament the loss of their departed friend.
