South African Commercial Advertiser (1826-1840)
Date transcribed | 2009-00-00 | Transcribed by | Sue McKay - Marianne Mansfield | Comment | Sue McKay has kindly authorized us to publish her transcriptions of Family History-related data from the Announcements in the South African Commercial Advertiser. This is because they include very many references to personnel in the service of The East India Company en route to or from India or on furlough in S. Africa, which offered a more temperate climate. Also included are many officers and soldiers of the British Army regiments who may well have served in India shortly before or after serving in South Africa. |
| Publication Date | 28 March 1840 | | Event Date | 28 March 1840 | | Event | Purchase of discharge by men of 72nd REGIMENT | | Full Entry | Saturday 28 March 1840:We beg to call the attention of the Public to the circumstance that a considerable number of the 72nd Regiment, about to return to England, have purchased their discharge and intend to remain at the Cape, and we are informed that many more would do the same, could they raise the necessary funds. Loans to the men for this purpose would secure the men to this Colony, and would soon be repaid, as the men of this Regiment bear an excellent character. Being pressed for time we can only offer this suggestion at present. | | Reference ( National Archives - Kew) | CO53/5 |
