| Surname | Wheeler | | Rank/ occupation | Captain | | Unit | 100th Regiment | | Death date | 10 Jun 1792 | | Source | Gentleman's Magazine | | Date | Jun 1792 | | Page number | 580 | | Detail | Capt. Wheeler, on the half-pay of the 100th regiment, the day after his marriage [(ee p.575, to Miss Whatmore of Salisbury). He was a most benevolent man, and so well mixed were the varieties of composition to from a pleasant companion and hearty friend that it may be truly allowed he has not left a better fellow behind him. His sufferings, it is said, when a prisoner under the tyrant of India, so ravaged his constitution that he fell a victim to them when happiness was apparently in his possession. The writer of this has often heard him say how lucky he was not to have his rank ascertained when taken prisoner, for he was in reality a Captain and, by not knowing it, was of course included in the list of subaltern prisoners and it but too well known that all the captains, with the commander of that ill-fated army, were put to death. On his return to Europe, he found himself in possession of a large fortune, with much he performed many liberal actions, and always seemed particularly happy to entertain the companions of his captivity. Many an honest soldier, who is dwindling away his life on half-pay, when he hears of his death will cast a remembering sigh to the many cheerful virtues of his departed friend, and think of ""the days that have passed"" [marriage was 9 June]. |
