Detail  At Paris, Alexis-Marie Rochon, Member of the Royal Academy of Sciences. He was born at Brest, in 1741, nominated correspondent to the Academy in 1765; and afterwards astronomer to the Navy. He discovered the property of double refraction possessed by crystal; and hence originated the ingenious micrometer of his invention [Extra material, 1817 Suppl. Part II, pages 637-638, adds that was in the East Indies, and left the Isle of France in 1772].
