He was in 1761, at the early age of 9 years, left an orphan� [pages 441-442 describe his career, his maternal uncle put him into the West Indies service, then ""soon after, he embarked in the East-India service; and in 1768 he passed for the fourth mate of the Duke of Portland Indiaman. In 1770 he entered into the royal navy...""].
