This excellent officer was lost with the Surchanen, a Dutch East Indiaman, which was lately made a prize, and foundered in the Channel. He fell a victim to his own humanity, by remaining so long on-board the prize, to effect the escape of the crew, that his acknowledged excellence in swimming proved fruitless: the vortex was too powerful, he sunk with the ship, and was seen no more. |
