His acqusition of languages was wonderful; besides being an eminent classical scholar, he was master of the language of the East, and had a strong natural genius for poetry; he assisted Walter Scott in his first popular work, ""The Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border"" and the motto to Marmion was taken by Scott from one of his popular odes [see also May 1812, page 486]. |
