In Ham-street, Ham-common, aged 75, Major Hook, E.I.C. He was a man of very singular character; and his residence was a marked spot by its gloomy and neglected appearance. By the will of a relation, he was entitled to an annuity ""whilst his wife was above ground."" To fulfill the tenor of this important document, after her death he caused her to be placed in a chamber, her body to be preserved, and a glass case to be placed over it. In this situation it has remained upwards of thirty years; but that he never permitted any one to enter the room but himself. Major Hook's habits were well known in the neighbourhood, and he was considered to be a man of large property [pages 572-573]. |
