[he proposed and built East Indiaman at a lower price than the usual builders despite much opposition. The Hartwell and the Belvidere were built in Sussex with the assistance of his friend Mr Henchman. As a result on the 24 February 1796 shipbuilding for the Company was thrown open to fair competition. He was also involved in proposals to build a depot on the Isle of Wight for the EIC.
