Duncan, younger brother of the celebrated Dr D. of Edinburgh. Since his arrival in India in 1781 he had been employed many hundred miles up the country in the capacity of engineer. A fire happened lately at Fort William, below Calcutta, which destroyed many of the works. Government judged it necessary to order him to that presidency to superintend the rebuilding them. Too anxious in the discharge of his duty, he fell a sacrifice to the climate. Naturally of a good constitution and of an open generous disposition, he thought nothing would ever hurt him, ever exposing himself to the rays of the sun, so destructive to most Europeans, and sleeping in a low roomed house, situated in a marshy part of Calcutta, he caught a fever, which in a short time carried him off. It will be some consolation to his friends in England to hear that he died universally regretted by all who knew him, particularly by the corps of engineers to whom he had the honour to belong. Dr Hare, physician at Calcutta, at whose house he died, employed his best skill and attention to preserve so valuable a life. |
