| Surname | Call | | First names | James | | Rank/ occupation | Collector | | Unit | Sea Customs | | Death date | 10 Jul 1799 | | Place of death | Madras | | Source | Gentleman's Magazine | | Date | Feb 1800 | | Page number | 181 | | Detail | At Madras, James Call, esq. brother to Sir John C. bart. of Whitefoord, co. Cornwall, who had been 34 years constantly resident at that place in the civil service of the Company; by which, and the singular hot summer of last year, his constitution was wholly exhausted at the age of 53. He was the third brother who died at that place, and had for many years been collector of the sea customs in a manner much approved of by the president in council. He was remarkably fond of gardening, and, at a place called the Red Hills, about 9 miles north west of Madras, he cultivated, with great care and attention, a spot of ground of about 10 acres, in which he had collected about 500 exotic trees, shrubs, and plants, from all parts of the world, and, amongst other valuable acquisitions, had produced such shoots and specimens from the cinnamon tree as gave him great hopes of being able, in a few years, to furnish a considerable quantity for exportation. |
