| Surname | Braithwaite | | First names | John | | Rank/ occupation | Major General | | Death date | 16 Aug 1803 | | Place of death | Welbeck St | | Source | Gentleman's Magazine | | Date | Aug 1803 | | Page number | 794 | | Detail | In Welbeck-street, Cavendish-squa. after a lingering illness, aged 64, Major-general Sir John Braithwaite, bart. lately returned from the coast of Coromandel, where he long held the chief command of the Companys army, and received repeated testimonies of the approbation of Government. When retiring from this distinguished situation, the general and field-officers of the army requested of him to accept the record of their esteem, affection, and respect, in a valuable service of plate, which they presented to him. His loss will be long deplored by those friends who experienced the undeviating sincerity of his regard, as well as by a very numerous circle of acquaintances, whom he ever enlivened by the most pleasing conversation, and received with the frankest hospitality. In public life he was a strict observer of discipline, zealous, skilful, brave, and of unshaken fidelity. |
