CommentThe certificates are divided into 6 parts in number order. To locate an individual name the alphabetical index at the front of part 1 will be required. Notes  to certify the principal officers and commissioners of HM Navy, that Mr Jas Wm Stewart served as voluntr 1st Class from 27 Aug 1811 to 4 Feb 1813 as Midshpman Ordy from 5 Jul 1813 to date hereof on board HMs ship Elephant under my command during which time he behaved with diligence attention and sobriety and he was always abedient to command at which time he was discharged from service by order of the Royal Honble the Lord Commission of the Admiralty. [signed] on board the Elephant at SpitLend 21 Dec 1813

This varied accumulation represents the surviving records of the East India Companys management of its commercial shipping activity. The series L/MAR/C/669 and 670 deal with Certificates of Age, which were generally in the form of Extracts of Birth/Baptism from Parish Registers, Sworn Affidavits, Letters from Family and Relatives and Letters from ship Commanders.
