Service  Lieutenant Thain served during the Sonthal Campaign, 55, 56. Present at the Mutiny of his Regiment at Lucknow, 30th May 57, and subsequent dispersion of the mutineers. Present at the action of Chinhut, 30th June 57. Served in the defence of Lucknow, from June to November 57. Commanding Innes outpost during several months of the siege. Medal and Clasp, and one years service. Mentioned in the Despatch of Sir J. Inglis, 26th September 57. Present with the Army under Lord Clyde in operations in the vicinity of Lucknow, subsequent to the relief of the Garrison. Present at the defeat, by Lord Clyde, on the 10th December 57, of the Gwalior Contingent at Cawnpore. Carried Despatches from the Governor-General to Sir James Outram, at Lucknow, in March 58. Present during part of the operations, resulting in the final capture of Lucknow. Clasp. Engaged in December 58, as Commandant of the Cavalry, portion of the Cawnpore Military Police, under Brigadier Herbert, in pursuit of Ferozeshah, through the Cawnpore and Etawah Districts. Commanded the District Police Battalion, in 59, 60, in the pacification of the Chundehree District, in Bundlecund,
