Service  Major Strangways served with the 71st Native Infantry at the defeat and dispersion of a body of dacoits who entered the Shahjehanpore District, in May and June 41. Commanded the 71st Native Infantry and re-captured the Bareilly Jail from the prisoners, who had risen and overpowered the Guard, in July 42. Received the thanks of Major-General Waters. Served during the Punjab Campaign, 48, 49. Led the advance party of a Detachment, 71st Native Infantry, at the attack and defeat of the rebels under Ram Sing, who occupied the heights in front of Noorpoor, in September 48. Received the thanks of Lieutenant-Colonel Fisher. Present at the capture of the Fort of Rungul Nuggur, in November 48. Served also in pursuit of bodies of insurgents, in 48, 49. Medal. Commanded the 71st Native Infantry on the night of the Mutiny at Lucknow, 31st May 57. Commanded the faithful detachment of that corps throughout the entire defence of Lucknow, from 31st June to November 57. ( Wounded on the 4th July 57) Medal and Clasp and one years service. Received the thanks of Government. Present with the Army under Lord Clyde at the battle of Cawnpore, in December 57.
