Service  Lieutenant H. Smithett served in the Campaign of 57, 58: was present with the Force under Sir Henry Havelock in its first advance to Lucknow, in Command of three guns of Captain W. Olpherts Light Field Battery, and present at the actions of Busseerutgunge, on 5th and 12th August. Served with Sir James Outrams Division in the advance to Lucknow. Present at passage of the Ganges, on 19th September; Mungulwarrah, 21st September; Alum Bagh, 23rd, and 1st relief of Lucknow, 25th September. Was besieged in the Garrison of Lucknow from 26th September till 17th November 57, during which time was wounded, first in October, by a shower of grape shot in seven places, and again, on 17th November, severely in the head by a musket ball. During the siege, commanded late 2nd Company, 3rd Battalion Bengal Artillery, with No. 12 Light Field Battery attached. Was present with Sir James Outrams Division at the Alum Bagh, during December 57, and January and February 58, and in all the assaults and engagements there, including the action at Guilee, on 22nd December, where he commanded four Horse Field Guns. Present at the final siege and capture of Lucknow, under Lord Clyde, in March and April 58. Medal and 2 Clasps. (Several times mentioned in Despatches.)
