Served with the Flying Column under Colonel Greathed, and in Command of a Detachment, 2nd Punjab Cavalry. Was present at the actions of Boolundshuhur and Malaghur, 28th September, Allyghur, 6th October, Akbarpore, 8th October, and Agra, 10th October 57. Mentioned three times in the Despatches of Colonel Greathed, in 57; by Colonel Cotton, 23rd December 57. Brought to the special notice of the Governor-General, 23rd December 57. Received at the recommendation of Sir Hope Grant the Victoria Cross, for gallantry at the battle of Agra, and on other occasions, 22nd February 58. Present at the action of Kanouje, 22nd October 57; at the relief of Lucknow, in November 57. Mentioned twice in Lord Clydes Despatches, and brought to the notice of the Governor-General, December 57. Received the thanks of the Governor-General, 10th December 57. Present at the battle of Cawnpore, 6th December 57; and brought to the notice of the Governor-General in Lord Clydes Despatch, 24th December 57. Present at the battle of Kala Nuddee, 2nd January 58; and storm and capture of Lucknow, March 58. Medal and 3 Clasps. Promoted to the rank of Brevet-Major for services in 57, 58. Received the Order of the Bath, 3rd August 58. Permitted to retain the Command of the 1st Sikh Irregular Cavalry, as a special reward for his services, while he was on furlough, 18th January 59. Commanded that Regiment throughout the China Expedition of 60. Mentioned in the Despatches of Sir Hope Grant. Recommended by H. R. H. the Duke of Cambridge, that a step of rank might be given him for his services in China, 24th January 61. Brought to the notice of His Excellency the Governor-General, 21st November 60. By Sir Hope Grant promoted to the rank of Brevet-Lieutenant-Colonel, for services in China, 60, 61. Medal and 2 Clasps.
