Gilbert. Present when the Sikh Army laid down its arms and surrendered its cannon at Rawul Pindee, and accompanied the troops that expelled the Afghans from Peshawur. Medal and 2 Clasps. Served as Brigade Major to the whole of the troops under the immediate orders of Sir Charles Napier. Engaged against the Affreedies in the Kohat Pass, in February 50. As Major of Brigade or Assistant Adjutant-General present in all the expeditions from Peshawur against the surrounding Hill Tribes, in the years 51, 52, 53, and 54. Served with the 31st Native Infantry, during the Sonthal Insurrection of 55, for more than three months, in Command of a separate Detachment. Served in the field during the Mutiny in 57, 58, and 59 ; at the battle of Badlee-ka-Serai as Assistant Adjutant-General of the Army, and succeeded to the charge of the Department of the Adjutant-General of the Army in the field, upon Colonel Chester being killed. Served throughout the siege of Delhi, a considerable portion of the time as Acting Adjutant-General. Accompanied the Column that left Delhi after the capture, and was present in the actions of Boolundshuhur, Agra, Maregunge, in Oude, and minor affairs. From the 12th November 57 to the close of the war acted as head of the Department of the Adjutant-General of the Army in the field. Present in this capacity at all the operations attending the final relief of Lucknow (horse shot), from 12th to 25th November; relief of Cawnpore and defeat of the Gwalior Contingent, 28th November to 6th December 57; action at Khodagunge, 2nd January 58, and re-occupation of Futtehghur; siege and capture of Lucknow, 2nd to 21st March; Campaign in Rohilcund, April and May 58 (wounded at the action of Bareilly); Campaign in Oude, October 58 to January 59, including actions at Doundia Khera, Burgudia, and Musjidia, and defeat of the Nanas troops on the bank of the Raptee. Medal and, 3 Clasps. Companion of the Bath. Brevets of Major and Lieutenant- Colonel. |
