Service  Lieutenant May served with the Volunteer Cavalry at Lucknow, under the Command of Major Radcliffe, late 7th Bengal Light Cavalry. Served with the Army at Lucknow, 57, 58. Was present at the siege of the Garrison of Lucknow, and served as a Subaltern of Artillery; and subsequently as Assistant Field Engineer, compiled plans for Colonel Inglis, Commanding the Garrison; and on the arrival of Sir James Outram, compiled a plan for the final relief of the Garrison by Lord Clyde. Served with the Force at Alum Bagh as Assistant Field Engineer, and compiled a plan for the final capture of Lucknow. Present at the action of Chinhut and various actions at the Alum Bagh (wounded slightly). Medal and 2 Clasps. Received the thanks of Government in G. G. O., dated 7th December 57. Served as Guide to the Forces under Command of Sir J. Outram; thanked and honorably mentioned in G. O. G. G., 5th April 58. Accompanied the Forces under Lord Clyde at the final capture of Lucknow.
