Service  Major Hire served as A. D. C. on the Staff of His Excellency the Commander-in-Chief, Lord Gough, and was present throughout the Campaign in the Punjab, including the skirmish at Ramnuggur, passage of the Chenab, and battles of Chillianwallah and Goojerat. Medal and 2 Clasps. Was mentioned favorably in two Despatches by His Excellency the Commander-in-Chief, 5th February 49 and 7th March 49, and his name recorded for a Brevet-Majority on attaining the rank of Captain regimentally. On the conclusion of the Campaign, was appointed Adjutant to the 3rd Irregular Cavalry, and rose successively to the Command of that Regiment.
