Present at Benares on the 7th July 57, in the attack on the Dhobys. Served in the Army under General Havelock; commanded a Detachment of the Regiment of Ferozepore, on 19th July 57, at Sydabad, near Allahabad, to protect the Grand Trunk Road. Captured a Mud Fort near the Grand Trunk Road, held by the rebel Joorie Sing, 18th August 57. Served in the defence of Cawnpore, under General Windham, November 57, and subsequent defeat of the Gwalior Contingent, December 57. Served in the Campaign in the Doab, capture of Futtehghur, action of Shumshabad, near Futtehghur, siege and capture of Lucknow, attack on the Fort of Rooya, in Oude, under Brigadier-General Walpole, action of Allygunge, Rohilcund Campaign, and occupation of Bareilly: during a severe engagement in the City of Lucknow succeeded to the temporary Command of the 4th Punjab Rifles, and brought the Regiment out of action. Medal and, Clasp. Thanked by the Officer Commanding at Allahabad, for taking the Fort held by Joorie Sing, August 57. Mentioned in Despatch of Sir E. Lugard, for the action in Lucknow of 19th March. Served as Interpreter to a Detachment of H. M.s 37th Foot, from Calcutta to Benares, June 57, and from Allahabad to Cawnpore, October 57. Mentioned in Despatch of Sir E.lugard. Served under Colonel Maxwell, in July 58, during the Campaign near Lucknow. |
