Service  Captain Hawes served throughout the Sonthal Campaign, in 55. Received the thanks of Government. Served throughout the siege of Lucknow, 57. Severely wounded in two places, and received a gratuity of twelve months pay, 27th July 58. As Acting Interpreter to H. M.s 53rd Foot, was present at the actions of 6th and 9th December 57, and 2nd January 58. As Brigade-Major and Intelligence Officer to the District Brigade Force, was present at the action of Khankur, 7th April 58. Mentioned in the Despatch of the Brigadier Commanding, 3rd May 58. Accompanied Lord Clydes Force as 2nd in Command of the Oude Military Police of the Trans-Gogra Division, in 58, and January 59. Medal and Clasp, and one years extra service.
