Service  Captain Gastrell served against the Jeypore Insurgents in 38. Served as Detachment Staff and Brigade Quarter-Master in the Bundlecund Campaign, 42, 43. As Sub-Assistant Commissary-General in the Punjab Campaign, 48, 49, and in the subsequent pursuit of the Sikh Army, under Major-General Gilbert. Present at the affair of Ramnuggur, and the battles of Chillianwallah and Goojerat. Medal and 2 Clasps. Served in the Sonthal Campaign, 55. Commanded one of the Detached Columns in the final beating up and subjugation of the Tribe.
