Service  Lieutenant F. M. Birch served during the Indian Mutinies. Present at the disaster at Chinhut, June '57. Mentioned in the Despatch of Brigadier Inglis, 25th September '57, as "having cleared a village with a party of skirmishers in a manner to elicit the admiration of the Brigadier-General." Served as A. D. C. to Brigadier Inglis from 2nd July to 25th September '57. Commanded a Detachment of the 71st Native Infantry throughout the whole of the siege, June '57. Engaged in three sorties. Commanded a party of Her Majesty's 84th Foot, 18th August '57, to repulse a grand attack; and subsequently regained possession of the breach. Slightly wounded twice. Medal and 2 Clasps. Favorably mentioned and brought to the notice of the Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief in Despatch of Brigadier Inglis, 25th September '61. Received the thanks of the Governor-General, 8th December '57. Present at the final relief of Lucknow, as A. D. C. to Sir J. Inglis. Received the thanks of the Governor-General, 12th January '58. Present at the advance on the 6th December '57, when the Gwalior Contingent Mutineers were turned out of Cawnpore. Present at the capture of the village of Hurrah, in Oude, March '58.
