Service  Lieutenant Bates served in India in 1857, and was severely and dangerously wounded on the occasion of the Mutiny at Julhundur, 7th June 1857. Right arm disabled. Medal. Served with No. 2 Column, Bundlecund Field Force, during the operations in 1859. Served throughout the China Expedition of 1860. Present at the batttle of Sinho, taking of Tonko, capture of the Taku Forts, and surrender of Pekin,and 2 Clasps. 1st class Certificate as Instructor of Musketry from Hythe,
