Simpson, Surg. Benjamin, M.D., Bde. Surg., Bengal Medical Department, HAAL:79, HAAL:80, HAAL:81, HAAL:82 [not in MR, SH]; photographer whose oeuvre (together with that of John Burke, q.v.) provides most complete photographic record of the war and country at this period; earliest recorded work at Dum Dum 1856 (exhibited Calcutta, attr. Capt. Simpson), with major emphasis throughout life on ethnography; contributed photographs to many pub. works, was active member and officer of various photographic societies in India and England (comm. John Falconer, Royal Maritime Museum, Greenwich); an album of photographs of Peiwar Kotal and Kurram Valley areas in NAM from firm of Bourne and Shepherd credibly attributed to Simpson; took over 140 photographs of Kandahar and environs in early 1881; major collections of his Afghanistan prints in NAM and Royal Geographical Society; was on leave 1880, hence all his Kandahar photographs at this city were taken between Jan. and march, or early April 1881 when the city was evacuated by the British troups (Ed.)
