Inscription  This tablet is erected by his friends and fellow volunteers in affectionate memory of Arthur King Meares of the Chutia Nagpur Mounted Rifles son of George Robert King Mearse Esq [Late of the Bengal Police] and Mary Venables Meares He was killed in action at Pardkard De Vet River Orange River Colony South Africa on the 5th of May 1900 Doing his duty to his Queen and Country whilst serving with Lumsdens Horse. Aged 22 years abd 3 months
