Inscription  Erected by public subscription. His successful defence of Herat, gallant bearing and judicious counsel throughout..the British reverses in Affghanistan need no eulogium here. Compelled to seek a change of climate for recovery of his health, he was returning to England via China when he was attacked by a malignant fever at Hong Kong and died there.
