Some people were also seen on the shore of the island, supposed to have belonged to the wreck. Some Gentlemen of Calcutta commiserating the situation of the people resolved at their own expense to dispatch a vessel in search of them. The Nancy Grab being then in River, bound to the Malabar Coast with Rice, Captain Quane very humanely undertook the service. Owing to the time of year he had to touch at Mauritius. On approaching the island of Galega he discovered the remains of the wreck. He could not bring the ship to an anchor so he sent Mr Brownlow his Chief Officer on shore in jolly boats. It was impossible to land so Mr Brownlow leapt into the water to warp the boat in. On examining the island he found a Caffre Man and Bengallee woman. Their account was that a year before the First Officer of a French vessel had orders to take her to the Isle of Bourbon but he ran away with her, and grounded her on the island in the hope of ruling as a prince of an insular domain. The crew had consisted the Officer, a European boy, eight natives of Madagascar and the Bengal woman with three months provisions. All died except four, two were rescued by a French ship but the other two had concealed themselves because they feared being taken to Mauritius as pirates.
