Summary Remarks  Anecdote of Young Lally. Monsieur De Vigil was formerly an officer in the Regiment de la Marque, but some disagreeable circumstance occurring he came to Pondicherry about four years ago where he was not much esteemed. He carried on a correspondence with the late Monsieur Lally who was generally supposed to be his uncle, and entices several Frenchmen, sailors and soldiers to desert to join Tippoo's troops. The French Governor Monsieur Conway was informed of his conduct and he was in consequence obliged to retire. He of course went to join Monsieur Lally and at his death received from Tippoo the command of Lally's Troops. Amongst French Gentlemen he was neither respected as a soldier or as a man of genius.
