A brave, honest, Christian gentleman. All through the crisis at Benares he was ever ready to give credit to his subordinates, never attributing to himself any portion of credit for services conjointly performed. On its being proposed to retire to Chunar Tucker opposed the suggestion, declared it to be the duty of every Englishman to stand fast. Although the position of affairs at Benares was most critical it never seemed to have entered into the head of any of the officials there to detain any of the English reinforcements intended for the relief of Cawnpore and Lucknow, and Tucker took a most active part in hurrying their despatch up country. If ever any body of hardly pressed Englishmen acted thoroughly unselfishly it was the brave set of Civilians at Benares�Tucker, Gubbins, Lind and Pollock. |
