When the Lieutenant Governor's health broke down, so as to incapacitate him for work, Reade was one of a Council of three, with Major Macleod and Brigadier Polwhele, to administer affairs. He was most active in directing measures for the defence of the fort, and was mainly instrumental in saving the Revenue records from the general destruction of Government property.
