Left Dehli on leave in March 1857, and so escaped the horrors of the first outbreak. But before leaving he had reported the circulation of the chupatis from village to village, the meaning of which has never been explained. Egerton returned from leave before Dehli had been recovered, but could not rejoin before October, when the city was in full possession of the English. He had his work cut out, and under his able and vigorous administration the city and district were quickly brought into order. |
