	Summary Remarks	Lord (now Marquis) Cornwallis came down to Madras to superintend the reduction of the French settlements at Pondicherry, Karikal and Mahe, but found that the work had been done before his arrival. Marquis Cornwallis sailed for Home from Madras in October of that year, and was succeeded as Governor General by Sir John Shore. The Governor of Madras during that time was Sir Charles Oakley.
