Summary Remarks  Lieutenant Colonel Baillie intended to join up with the Grand Army under Major General Sir Hector Munro, but was attacked by the son of Hyder Ali, whom he defeated. His detachment consisted of 300 European Infantry, some Artillery and three Battalions of Sepoys and ten cannon. He was cut off from the Grand Army by Hyder Ali. He sent word for reinforcements and a detachment was formed under Lieutenant Colonel Fletcher of Cadets, Grenadiers, Light Infantry, and Companies of the Highland Regiment, and under the orders of Major Elphinstone, two Companies of the Company's Grenadiers and ten Companies of Grenadier Sepoys. They all met up and were ambushed and defeated by Hyder Ali's army. General Munro retreated with great precipitation to Chingleput.
