| | Cemetery | South Park Street | | | Surname | Gordon | | | Forename(s) | James | | | Rank or Title | Major | | | Year of Death | 1817 | | | Inscription | Sacred to the Memory of Major James Gordon, Deputy Adjutant General to the Bengal Army, who after a lingering illness departed this life on the 12th of June 1817, in the 35th year of his age. Blest with an enlightened and a virtuous mind, Major Gordon in every situation displayed those qualities and professional talents which had early raised him to distinction, and had the fairest prospect at no distant period of enjoying in his native land, the well earned reward of a life spent in the performance of his duties, but it was otherwise decreed, and his early fate affords another lesson of the utter vanity of all human views that do not look beyond the present state, for his friends can now dwell with pleasure on those circumstances of his life which led them to hope he has exchanged the chequered scenes of transitory existence for the joys of eternal bliss. |
