Inscription  This grave marker once covered the mass grave of 29 members of the 67th Foot (South Hampshire Regiment), one of the antecedents of today's Princness of Wales's Royal Regiment. The 67th Foot Foot were involved in Afghanistan from 20 November 1878 to 27 April 1881 and fought at Charasiab (6 October 1879) and Kabul (11-23 December 1879). During the battles in Kabul the regiment, which was assigned to the Kurram Division of the Kabul Field Force, consisted of 15 officers and 439 other ranks. On 13 December 1879 the regiment was dispatched to clear the enemy from the Takht-i-Shah Peak, a dominating hill feature one mile south of Kabul. After several hours of preliminary shelling by the artillery, an infranty force consisting of the 67th, the 92nd Highlanders ('The Gordons'), Gurkhas and Sikhs made the assault on the peak. In spite of the subbornness with which the Afghans fought, the soldiers established themselves on the low hill on the Kotal. They tried to work their way upwards but the fire from the Afghans was so true and so well sustained that the atempt had to be given up. Many casualties were sustained in the attempt to gain the peak that day. Many of them from the 67th Foot, some of whom lay here in the Sherpur cemetery.
