Register Entry  The death occurred on Friday morning in Brunton Road Bangalore of Mr Hartwell James the oldest European resident of that city at the age of 87. He came out in the early thirties of the last century and acquired considerable landed property on which he built some of the finest bungalows in the high ground locality. In 1851 he started the first Bangalore newspaper known as the Herald which flourished considerably in the pre-railway days. In later years he was a Superintendent in the Mysore Chief Commissioner's Office and retired as Residency Press Superintendent and Registrar of Assurances.
