Detail  [At Greenwich, aged 68, Secretary of the Royal Hospital, Greenwich. Born Okehampton, Devon, 28 Feb. 1787, educated at Christ's Hospital. In Dec. 1802 entered EICS Bombay Castle as a midshipman, and while in that ship was engaged with a French squadron under Linois in the China seas. Upon his return to England was recommended to Commodore Sir Home Popham by his MP, and joined the Royal Navy, in the Diadem, under Popham's command, and soon became his secretary. Appointed Secretary to the Hospital in 1823, retired in 1853]
