At his house in New-street, Spring Gardens, aged 62, Sir Robert Buckley Comyn, D.C.L. a bencher of the Middle Temple. He was born at Tottenham in Middlesex, being the third son of the Rev. Thomas Comyn, Vicar of that parish, by Harriet Charlotte Stables his wife; and grandson of Stephen Comyn, esq. barrister-at-law. He was educated at Merchant Taylors' school, and became a commoner of St John's college, Oxford in 1809, where he graduated B.A. 1813, M.A. 1815; and he was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn, Nov. 24, 1814. In Jan. 1825 he was appointed a puisne judge of the Supreme Court at Calcutta, and received the honour of knighthood on the 9th Feb. In Dec. 1835 he was advanced to the office of the Supreme Court at Madras. In 1842 he resigned and returned to England; when he was created a D.C.L. by the university of Oxford; and in 1844 he was elected a bencher of the Middle Temple. He was the author of ""A Treatise on the Law of Usury, 1817, 8vo.; and of ""A History of the Western Empire from the birth of Charlemagne to the accession of Charles V."" The latter work was the fruit of his leisure hours whilst in India, and was published on his return to England. |
